Bereket receives 2nd place at the SURE Symposium
Bereket worked with Lotanna Onuan and Dr.
Nian Liu to electrodeposit bismuth on various substances to improve
vanadium redox flow batteries. Bereket was in our lab for 10 weeks ad
received 2nd place at the poster competition. Congratulations Bereket.

Lotanna wins 2024 Georgia Tech Pathbreaker's Fellowship
Lotanna Onua, a 3rd year PhD candidate, was awarded the 2024 Georgia Tech Pathbreaker's Fellowship. The fellowship is awarded to diverse PhD students in the college of engineering who have shown an ability to succeed in the face of adversity. The award amount is $10,000 per year for a maximum of 3 years.

New article to probe the degradadation of aluminum can ends in real time
Beverage cans have a 40 Billion USD market size. The new beverages introduced to the global market every year pose a risk to the strength and safety of the can. In collaboration with Novelis Inc., an aluminum rolling company headquartered in Atlanta, Alex Filippas from the Nian Liu lab published a research article in the journal Food Packaging and Shelf Life, reporting an electrochemical method to probe the degradation of aluminum can ends in real time.

Students visit from Albany State
Students visited our lab from Albany State University to learn more about electrochemistry. The students come from a diverse background of study not related to electrochemistry, so they were very excited to learn about what we do in the lab. Lotanna showed them the flow battery experiments and Zhitao showed them the zinc battery experiments. Dr. Liu explained the engineering side of electrochemistry.

Nian Liu lab DOE grant
Nian Liu lab is part of a team led by New Lab LLC that won a $4 million grant from DOE's Storage Innovations (SI) 2030 strategic initiative, to innovate zinc batteries for long-duration energy storage.

Prof. Nian Liu has received tenure at Georgia Tech and promotion to Associate Professor. The promotions will officially take place in August.
