(February 2, 2022)--Helen Wong, a RBI fellow working with Elsa and Nian, has published a research article on ACS Applied Polymer Materials, reporting a “single-pot” synthetic approach that affords a solid polymer electrolyte comprising cellulose-based nanocrystals and a cross-linked interpenetrating polymer network, for all-solid-state lithium batteries.
(February 2, 2022)--Nian Liu co-authored with a few other ChBE faculty members at Georgia Tech an article in Chemical Engineering Education on “How chemical engineering students have changed over two decades: a perspective from Georgia Tech.” The article presents results from a 36-question survey provided to sophomores and seniors in ChBE at Georgia Tech in 1996-1997 and 2018-2019. The results from the almost-600 students highlight student perspectives on chemical engineering, showing similarities and differences between sophomores and seniors, and between students in the 1990s and today.

(October 19, 2021)--Tzu-Ho Wu, a Postdoctoral scholar in Nian Liu lab, published a Research Article in ACS Applied Energy Materials reporting the first direct visual evidence that MnO2, a cathode material for zinc-ion batteries, goes through a dissolution-redeposition process during battery operation. Tzu-Ho is now an Assistant Professor at National Yunlin University of Science and Technology in Taiwan.

(July 19, 2021)--Chihyun Hwang, a Postdoctoral scholar in Nian Liu lab, published a Research Article in Advanced Materials reporting on the use of a self-assembling covalent organic framework approach. This modification of the zinc anode is a scalable process which substantially improves ZAB performance, and is particularly of use in the niche application of non-planar anode surfaces (e.g. wire battery).
(July 10, 2021)--Huitian Liu, a visiting scholar in Nian Liu lab, published a Research Article in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces reporting the understanding of the nucleation and growth of Zn electrodeposits in aqueous Zn-ion batteries. The article also demonstrated a way to control the nucleation and growth and extend the battery life.

(July 1, 2021)--Yuju Jeon, a visiting scholar in Nian Liu lab, published a Research Article in Electrochimica Acta reporting on an in situ optical microscopy study which compared zinc plating behavior using aqueous alkaline electrolyte with the zinc plating behavior using a cross-linked PAA/MBA gel polymer electrolyte. The study validated the dendrite-suppressing capability of GPE in zinc-ion battery systems and also provided the first visualization of dendrite suppression for the Zinc-ion GPE system.

(February 5, 2021)--Yamin Zhang, an alumna of Nian Liu lab and now a postdoc at Northwestern University, published a Research Article in Journal of Power Sources reporting the influence of cell configuration on the performance of zinc-based aqueous batteries. The paper also provides an effective and accessible cell configuration for the community to adopt. Among the authors, Anmol and Sarah are ChBE undergrads and PURA winners that worked with Yamin on this project.

(January 21, 2021)--Solid polymer electrolyte is a critical component for all-solid-state Li-ion batteries. Yubin He, an alumnus of the Nian Liu lab and now a postdoc at UC Riverside, published a research article in the journal ChemistrySelect, reporting a new solid polymer electrolyte with anions covalently tethered to the polymer backbone, so Li+ is the only charge carrier. Such a molecular structure allows this polymer electrolyte to efficiently transport Li+ and achieve a transference number of 0.83, much higher than conventional solid polymer electrolytes.
(January 13, 2021)--Dr. Nian Liu co-authored a review article in Materials Today, together with scientists from Pacific Northwestern National Lab and Army Research Lab. The article thoroughly analyzed the perspective of Zn-based aqueous rechargeable batteries, a pre-Li-ion technology that has seen a renaissance recently as new materials, techniques, and applications emerged.

(September 9, 2020)--Chao Wang, a visiting PhD student in Nian Liu's lab, published a research article in Nano Letters. In this work, ceramic nanoparticles were percolated along natural-cellulose-derived hierarchical networks for high Li+ conductivity and mechanical strength, which are difficult to achieve at the same time in solid-state electrolytes for solid-state Li-ion batteries.

(June 8, 2020)--Yubin He, a postdoc in Paul Kohl and Nian Liu labs, published a research article in Journal of The Electrochemical Society, reporting a pendent-type polymer electrolyte for solid-state Li-ion batteries. By moving the ion-conducting moieties from the backbone to side chains, high ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability were achieved at the same time.
(June 4, 2020)--Chihyun Hwang, a visiting scholar in Nian Liu lab, published a research article on ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, reporting ferroelectric polymer nanofiber network as an effective host to enable rechargeable lithium metal anode.
(May 26, 2020)--Yamin Zhang, a fourth year PhD student in the Nian Liu lab, published a letter in Nano Letters. This work demonstrated the use of titanium dioxide as a coating on zinc oxide nanorod anodes. This approach overcomes passivation, dissolution, and hydrogen evolution issues simultaneously.
(April 20, 2020)--Thomas Fuller and Nian Liu, as a technical editor and a guest editor (respectively), helped co-edit a Focus Issue of "Heterogeneous Functional Materials for Energy Conversion and Storage" of the Journal of the Electrochemical Society. Among the 35 papers in this Issue, one is from the Kohl lab, another is from the Reichmanis lab.
(January 30, 2020)--Nian Liu co-authored a research article in Nature Communications, reporting a way to electronically change the shape of sulfur microdroplets, and demonstrating their application as electro-tunable microlenses. This work is Episode II of his previous paper on the electrochemical generation of supercooled sulfur microdroplets.
(January 29, 2020)--The Nian Liu lab published a research article in the Journal of The Electrochemical Society, reporting NiCo2Se4 nanowires as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for oxygen redox reactions. (August 15, 2019)--Yutong Wu, a 3rd-year (turning 4th-year) PhD student in Nian Liu lab, published a research article on Angewandte Chemie International Edition. This work developed a method to visualize the microscopic dynamics at the electrode-electrolyte interface of zinc-bromine redox flow batteries (ZBFB), a promising technology for stationary, utility-scale energy storage. The insights obtained in this study can potentially guide the design of high-performance ZBFB, and facilitate the integration of renewable yet intermittent electricity into the existing electric grid. Po-Wei Huang, a master student in Nian Liu lab, is the co-first author.

(March 6, 2019)--Dr. Liu co-authored a research article in Nature Nanotechnology, reporting the development of bright sub-20-nm cathodoluminescent nanoprobes for electron microscopy. These multicolor probes are small enough for labeling specific sites in the cell, and also bright enough to be individually localized under electron microscope.
(January 10, 2019)--Dr. Liu authored a research article in PNAS about an electrochemical way to generate super-cooled substance for the first time. This method is reported to offer improved spatial, temporal, and size controllability over conventional thermal methods.
